Welcome to my first posting of 2025! Today I'm sharing my new mashup of the disco classic Relight My Fire and one of my favorite songs by Miho Nakayama Catch Me - Catch My Fire.
Dan Hartman's disco hit Relight My Fire (1979) needs no introduction. It is one of my favorite disco songs of all time and is a staple in my classic disco sets. I adore the gorgeous strings and horns played by MFSB, as much as the dramatic vocal refrain recorded by Loleatta Holloway. I assure you will get pumped up, if you hear the song in full glory with the intro Vertigo. To think Dan wrote and produced another disco anthem Love Sensation (1980) and asked Loleatta to record it, he must have been so pleased with her performance on this record.
Miho Nakayama debuted in 1985 and rocketted to fame in Japan as a singer and actress. I was a big fan, following her music releases and the TV dramas she starred in. Catch Me was released in 1987 and became her first number one hit. It was a lead single of her album Catch The Nite (1988), produced by Toshiki Kadomatsu. I really liked his sophisticated synth pop sound and listened to the album a lot. In the 90s she starred in the movie Love Letter (1995) and won many awards.
I was really shocked and saddened to hear the news of her untimely passing last year. She was close to my age, so it felt like I had lost someone I spent my adolescent years with. When I was preparing for my set for Tokyo Disco Parfait in Hakuba, I thought of making a mashup of one of her songs to pay tribute to her legacy and I chose Catch Me and Relight My Fire, the cover version produced by DJ Gomi. It's my first mashup using a Japanese song, and I'm very pleased with it. I hope you like it.
